Evans Easyspace, the UK’s leading provider of new, flexible office and workshop space for small and growing businesses, has cited the government’s plans to scrap empty rates relief in England from April next year as the key contributor to its decision to postpone over £6 million of development planned in Merseyside and Staffordshire.
The new legislation, which was rushed through in this year’s budget, has been introduced as a means of encouraging landlords to maintain full occupancy in their properties. For Evans Easyspace the changes will add approximately £500,000 to its 2008 budget forecast and, as a result of this additional cost, two Evans Easyspace developments planned for Speke and Cannock have had to be postponed which will have an adverse effect on the local business communities where a further 400 jobs would have been created.
