Serviced Offices in Birmingham: Orega’s Colmore Plaza business centre, with its sweeping views across the Birmingham skyline, played host this week to the Business Centre Association’s latest regional meeting.
More than 40 people from the business centre industry were treated to an informative and entertaining programme of speakers and panellists over the course of the day. Following an introduction by BCA executive director Jennifer Brooke, Simon Jones of Avenir Marketing gave an instructional presentation on how to deal more effectively with enquiries and viewings. The Business Centre Association (BCA) has called for local authorities to enter into public/private partnerships with its members to run flexible workspace or to sell off under-performing local authority-run business centres in line with the government’s pre-Budget aim to cut costs and raise money from its property estate. The BCA says such moves would encourage more private sector development of business centres in the UK to support the burgeoning SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) sector*, which would in turn create greater employment and regeneration opportunities. They could additionally attract more inward investment through the provision of flexible satellite office space for new or growing SMEs from overseas. Anne Corstorphine, Managing Director of City Spirit St Paul’s and Board Member of the Business Centre Association (BCA) joined fellow members to host a reception at the House of Common’s last week.
The BCA are trying to encourage cross-party MPs to retain the £15,000 Rateable Value (RV) threshold on empty property rates. Board members were able to inform MPs that a change to the £15,000 RV in the Chancellor’s pre-budget report would threaten the survival of many small businesses.
